Assistive Technology

What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices and the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. AT promotes greater independence for people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. Although, Cook & Hussey (2001) [1] report this term is usually not used for rehabilitative devices and for devices that able-bodied find useful. According to disability advocates, technology is often created without regard to people with disabilities, creating unnecessary barriers to hundreds of millions of people.

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial।

Tutorial One

A definition of Information Technology/Information Communications Technology

IT (information technology) is a term that encompasses all forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and use information in its various forms (business data, voice conversations, still images, motion pictures, multimedia presentations, and other forms, including those not yet conceived).
Berners-Lee, Tim. "The Founder's Message." 2001. "The Founder's Message." The Examined Life in the Digital Age. Forbes ASAP Big Issues Series. NY: John Wiley and Sons.

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?

IT has become a common everyday activity for the majority of people and it is now become an necessity. We use so many different forms of technology even within our own New Zealand homes eg: laptops, computers, cellphones, home phones and internet.

What IT devices or system do you feel comfortable and competent using?

Cellphones, digital camera, video camera, computer/laptop, ipod.

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences consider how IT is being used in Occupational Therapy practice?

Computers are a big one, these are used for emailing, looking up unknown knowledge, typing up client or staff forms and applications to other providers or support groups etc. Other technology used are things like cellphones, digital cameras, and pagers.

Ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (e.g. mobile phones) or systems (e.g. internet)

There needs to be consent, it can also be an invasion of privacy and confidentiality। Also if the information ends up in the wrong hands (sent to the wrong person by mistake) this can have some serious implications.

A definition of Computer Ethics

Computer ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social situations.
(Retrieved May 19th, 2008, from
wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_ethics">http://en।wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_ethics
).

A definition of Intellectual Property

In law, intellectual property (IP) is an umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attach to certain types of information, ideas, or other intangibles in their expressed form. The holder of this legal entitlement is generally entitled to exercise various exclusive rights in relation to the subject matter of the IP. The term intellectual property reflects the idea that this subject matter is the product of the mind or the intellect, and that IP rights may be protected at law in the same way as any other form of property. However, the use of the term and the concepts it is said to embody are the subject of some controversy
(Retrieved May 19th , 2008, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property).

A definition of Social Justice

Social justice mostly refers to an ideal of society, where "justice" refers to economic status rather than to the administration of laws। It is based on the idea of a society which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society, although what is "fair treatment" and a "just share" must remain unclear or subject to interpretation
(Retreived May 19th, 2008, from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_justice).

A definition of Informed Consent

An agreement to do something or to allow something to happen, made with complete knowledge of all relevant facts, such as the risks involved or any available alternatives. For example, a patient may give informed consent to medical treatment only after the healthcare professional has disclosed all possible risks involved in accepting or rejecting the treatment.

Why (or why not) a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practice and daily lives.

Technology has become part of our lives, As young children grow they are shown and taught many ways in which to use technology. Although technology is good it also has its bad as well it is import to remember people’s rights and ethical issues that can arise when dealing with patient notes.

Tutorial four and five

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by U Tube
You tube is a very popular websites and one of the biggest growing websites in the world, it is estimated that the website averages nearly 20 million visitors per month! Youtube is where users can upload, view and share: video content, movie clips, TV clips, music videos and video blogging on pretty much anything you want to show the world, from crazy flat party’s to how to use a sewing machine. You tube great because it’s easy to use and navigate around.

Provide a brief account (1-2 paragraphs) on how the use of planning storyboarding and scripting aided your groups short film.
A story board is a visual aid of the different shots and ideas your film will entail in order. Story boarding helped us when we created our short film to decide what theme we were going to have and what was going to be at the start and end of our film. We set a theme of the graffiti around the student area. Generally when we were out taking photos we went on each other’s ideas rather than referring back to the story board because we all had a very clear idea of the shots we were going to be taking or looking for.

Tutorial Two

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”। Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology। What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?

Digital cameras are great; they do make life that little bit easier. With a digital camera you are able to go into many shops just put in the memory card and print your photos off there and then. You are able to change, inhance, delete, save, select particular photos to print, look at photos straight away AND take a lot more photos on that one camera than what used to have been only around 24 photos per film.
BUT, with a digital camera the excitement of going to pick up the photos a day later and looking at them for the first time.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Digital images can be stored on websites like Flicr, Ringo, Facebook, or things like flashdrives, cd’s, cellphones and computer The images on a digital camera and be stored on a memory card and viewed on the computer as an image file which can then be printed and or emailed.

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.

When taking and sharing photos on the internet we need to beaware about peoples rights and remember that without a person’s consent this is invading their privacy and their rights

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice.

It is a good way to present information to a client that’s a visual learner. This could be presenting such information as hip precautions – do’s and don’ts etc

There are also many other reasons why digital images can be used such as:
House modifications
Car modifications
Renovations
Equipment

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com

Flickr is a photo sharing website that people/ friends can view publicy or privately. Flickr is a great way to store, sort, search and share your photos online. Flickr helps organize photos too. With the images you upload to Flickr you can make things like calenders, photo cubes, books, postage stamps, slide shows and much more.

Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com

Ringo. http://www.ringo.com/

Explain what the differences between a digital and an optical जूम
Optical zoom is similar to what you'll find in most cameras: When you push the button to zoom in or out, physical lens elements move inside the camera, to achieve the desired effect.
Digital zoom, on the other hand, has no moving parts. Using the "electronic brain" within the camera instead, the camera takes a look at what it's "looking at", and digitally zooms in, usually two or three times closer.
The problem with digital zoom is that you lose quality – images tend to be more "pixelated."

Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel

Digital cameras capture images and pixel elements, known as pixels. A megapixel is equal to one million pixels.

Digital images are made up of thousands of these tiny, tile-like picture elements. The more pixels, the higher the image resolution. Resolution relates primarily to print size and the amount of detail an image has when viewed on a computer monitor at 100%. The number of megapixels is only one aspect of the quality of a camera, or the quality of a photo that it produces. Factors such as camera sensor and the optical quality of a lens play equally important roles. If you buy a digital camera with too few megapixels for your printing and editing needs, your photos will be degraded.

Tutorial six

Provide the web address and the name of the community that you are investigating

Bebo
http://www.bebo.com/

What is the brief focus of the community?

It is a social community where friends and family can keep I touch from anywhere in the world.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?

Beboers that sign up to the bebo sight are able to access all sorts of things like communities, music, videos, authors, and also search under other categories for anything in particular you wish to find/visit. This site is very interactive, and is easy to spend many hours checking out friends photos, finding friends around the world and even checking out what deals the bars have on for the week. Just head to the address given above and check it out!!

Why do people choose to contribute to this community? What is it they are seeking?

There are many reasons why people contribute to this community, it could be to make new friends, met new people, find out the latest craze, feel included, find old school friends, chat to friends or family overseas, or maybe for just a good time waster.

Here are some examples to connect straight into even if you are not signed up yet.

• Pink ribbon – Breast cancer supporter
http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=5410481679&SourceCd=DT
• Easy and fast way to find people like you on bebo

• Support against child abuse
http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=6177608699&ShowSims=Y
• Bebo videos
http://www.bebo.com/Video.jsp

Potential ethical issues that may arise in this community

You need to be aware when taking photos of others and adding them to your bebo site that without the people’s consent this can be against their own rights and their confidentiality.
Beaware that when you are adding things like pictures, videos and symbols to your site if it is going to be offensive that your site will be deleted.

The benefits of this online community and what it lacks

This community is run only through the internet, it makes it a great way for people to interact with people all over the world and express themselves in their own way by adding their own videos, photos skins (page backgrounds) etc. Bebo is continuously updating and creating a even bigger and better site.
Although bebo is great it can not provide the social interaction with people and other groups like traditional communities can.

Tutorial Three:

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Blogger

A blog is like a personal online diary that’s instantly published to your own website. A blog can contain your own private thoughts that you can share though the internet for all of the world to see/view. This can be about and be used for anything at all, it can be used for news, reviews, products etc for a business, organisation etc. This is great as it helps the user stay in touch with the website with new and up to date information. You can also view and post messages to other bloggers! Blogger lets you publish photos; videos, images from you tube, and basically be as creative as you want. Other blog host are bebo, myspace and facebook.
